Texas Hold'em Poker - To Bluff Or Not To Bluff

Author: William Sheehan

Many players think that bluffing is the major component to winning in texas holdem poker, however this is not necessarily the case. While bluffing is an important element to the game, it is not the shear act of bluffing that wins pots, but knowing the who, what, where, when, why, and how of bluffing that does. A skilled bluffer will keep the other players at the table constantly guessing as to whether he has a legitimate hand or not.

When deciding to bluff or not, you need to consider who your opponents are. Whether youre playing against old friends in a regular game or facing strangers in an online poker tournament, its important to pay attention to what the other players are doing through each round. If youre up against a player who calls every hand, you should probably be wary of bluffing. Its difficult to read this sort of player since he tends to call no matter what the starting hand strength of his pocket cards. If youre up against a tight player who folds easily, you will probably see more successful bluffs since he doesnt want to risk more chips on the chance that you have a better hand. However, this type of player is more likely to go to the end and beat your bluff if he has a high hand strength, so you need to bluff carefully.

What type of bluff you perform is also important to consider. A pure bluff is one that is made when the player has a poor hand and the odds of winning the pot are slim-to-none. The goal of a pure bluff is to make the other players fold in order to steal the pot. A semi-bluff is one that is made when the player has a hand that has a chance of improving in subsequent rounds. The goal of the semi-bluff is to make the other players fold or to gain a card yet to be dealt that could form a legitimate hand. The semi-bluff is all about perspective. If the flop shows an A-7-3 of diamonds, the other players might assume that you have the ace for a pair or the diamond for a flush. Your odds of catching one of these cards, assuming you have neither, are actually about 52%. You can bluff the other players into thinking you have these pocket cards, causing them to fold. Or you can cause other players to bet further, forcing you to move forward in the hopes of catching a legitimate hand or another opportunity to get your opponents to fold after theyve surrendered more chips. Its risky, but you have a good chance of creating a legitimate hand out of your initial bluff.

Where youre sitting in relation to the button is also an important factor to consider when choosing to bluff or not. Being closest to the button is the most advantageous position to be in when it comes to bluffing. This means that you are either sitting in one of the first positions (early spots) or one of the last positions (late spots) and therefore able to see what everyone else does before having to make your own decisions about what to do next. If you see the other players checking or calling rather than raising, you might assume that it is because they have a weak hand strength and the time might be right to bluff with a raise in order to steal the pot with little risk to you.

There are several questions to answer while asking yourself when to bluff. First, theres the question of bluffing early or late. If you decide to bluff early, meaning that there are more cards to be dealt, you need to decide how far you want to take the bluff before you become the victim rather than the victor. Lets say you decide to bluff with a 7-2 unsuited as your pocket cards. This hand has a 4% chance of winning the pot. Not good odds, but you feel the time is right to bluff, so you go for it. Your only real chance of winning anything out of this early bluff is if you can get some of your opponents to put some of their money in for a round or two and then get them to fold as early as possible. If someone raises you on this type of early bluff, you need to assume that they know youre bluffing and get out while you can before you get taken on your own bluff. If youre called on this type of bluff, you need to ask yourself if your odds of winning are worth the potential risk. Since there are still more cards to be dealt, potentially helping your hand or your opponents, you need to assess whether or not this early bluff is worth losing more money down the line.

If you decide to bluff late, meaning that there are no more cards to be dealt, you need to consider how much money you have already put into the pot and if it is worth the risk to lose more. Lets say your pocket cards are K-J unsuited and the community cards on the table are Q-10-8-8-2 with no possibility of a flush. Your opponent could assume that you either have the Q or the J-9. If they do, then theyll fold and youll win the pot. The danger here, however, is that you need to consider what they might have. So, if your opponent calls or raises your bluff, assume that they have the better hand strength and get out without losing more money than you can afford to.

Another consideration to make as to when to bluff is how many opponents are still in play. If there are more than two players in the hand, save your bluff for later. The more players there are in the hand means the higher the risk that one of them will call you. The less people you have to fool, the better the odds youll actually fool them.

The why of bluffing is obvious, youre trying to win the other players money. While its true that there are players who win without bluffing, its not really the best strategy to have in texas holdem poker. Plus, it takes the fun and excitement out of the game. The basic rule of thumb is if you never bluff, you probably wont win as much money as you could. If you always bluff, you will eventually lose more hands than you win and with it all of your money. In the end, its best to bluff just the right amount to keep your opponents guessing. A good balance of bluffed hands along with legitimately played hands, if done correctly, will usually net you the greatest amount of wins. With the right amount of bluffing, your opponents will think your legitimate hands are bluffs and your bluffed hands are legitimate.

The how of bluffing is probably the hardest part to master. Texas holdem poker is a game of luck, skill, and presentation. How you act while youre playing is going to be watched closely by amateur and professional players alike. Everyones trying to catch those ever-so-slight tells. While everyone has their own strategy, its probably best to remain as consistent a player as possible. Trying to fake out other players by over- or under-acting can be risky and can become a tell in and of itself. If you stay consistent with your betting and folding throughout the game, it will be harder to detect a change in your strategy when youre bluffing. It might also be advantageous for you to get caught bluffing early-on in the rounds. If you allow yourself to get caught, the other players might misinterpret later legitimate hands as bluffs and you can win more money with a strong hand strength while other players foolishly think that youre just bluffing them.

Considering all of these options is a daunting task, so dont expect to become an expert overnight. Even the most polished professional poker players get caught bluffing and make mistakes, so dont worry if youre not a successful bluffer in the beginning. The key to all aspects of texas holdem poker is practice, practice, practice. Dont be afraid to try some of these bluffing tactics and soon youll be bluffing like a pro.
